Houston has been making a number of transportation improvements lately that don’t center around the almighty automobile. And now they’re doing more to attack the famous first mile/last mile issue that reduces the effectiveness of many transit systems. How?
The Houston light rail system will soon feature new cars designed to better accommodate cyclists. They hope this will encourage transit riders whose starting points or destinations are too far from transit stops for walking to be practical, but close enough that biking is. If the recent and dramatic increase in the use of bicycle racks on local busses is any indication, adoption of bike + train transport will likely be strong.
